We introduced the group at this meeting to one side of the musical life of our city! Kultprosvet invited volunteers, curators, and all friends to “Kvartirnik.” Kvartirniks are small concerts in an unconstrained, homely environment where musicians and listeners can directly communicate with each other. Kvartirnik concerts were held in the Soviet Union when many musicians and rock groups couldn’t officially give a public concert because of the conflict with the government’s cultural policy. Kvartirnik concerts were given by famous Russian rock musicians – including Boris Grebenshikov, Victor Tsoi, Mike Naumenko, Yurii Shevchik and many others. On April 11 at 7:00p.m., a kvartirnik concert was given by the Petersburg-Tomsk group “Majenta” (vocals, guitar, violin) in a cozy apartment in the city center. The concert was heard by more than 40 people! They remember the great music, informal atmosphere, tea and delicious snacks!

One of the best theaters in St. Petersburg, the Small Dramatic Theater, hosted a performance of “Uncle Vanya” in March. The performance was adapted from the Chekov play in 2003 and from the time of its founding, it has received many prizes, some of which include the National Theater Award – the “Golden Mask.” We invited all of Kultprosvet’s participants who were interested, excited, and familiar with the Chekov drama to attend together!

There were two events: a lecture “Chekov and Russian theater” and a trip to the theater for “Uncle Vanya.”
In the very center of Petersburg behind the AlexanderTheater there is an interesting museum of theatrical art. In this museum portraits of famous theatrical figures, posters, costumes, documents, performance props, models, actors’ personal belongings and sketches of famous artists are stored. On March 21st before the performance of “Uncle Vanya” we will go for a lecture/excursion on the topic “Russian theater and Chekov” designed especially for us. The moderator explained the characteristic difference between Russian and European theater, highlighted the important moments in the history of Russian theater’s development, and talked about why Chekov’s play opened a new page in Russian drama. photographs
