The History of the German-Russian Exchange

How it all began

Winter 1991

In the course of a  fundraising campaign  organised by the  Berlin newspaper "Tagesspiegel"  considerable public attention was  attracted to the social problems in Russia. In winter 1992/93 the foundation  for the German-Russian Exchange e.V was laid with the money raised and with a first project concept.

In 1992, the „Deutsch-Russischer Austausch e.V.“ was registered as association in Berlin.

The name of "Ðóññêî-íåìåöêèé îáìåí" in Saint Petersburg is changed o "Center for the development of NGOs" and up to 1999 (when the GRE was refounded) the GRE didn't legally exist as a NGO.
