ART-SOBES 2006

ART-SOBES Festival – “Watch Out! - Heroism”

The idea with the festival continues to be the same as with the first Art Sobes festival in 2006, to use art as a tool to raise awareness of important social issues. Art is critical, humanist and widely accessible for people and thereby suitable for the public room.

On the agenda of the festival you find the identification of the right to freedom of personal developments and free expression. This year we deal with the topic of heroism, and discuss the mechanisms of the creation of heroes. We also deal with the question of why some people are named heroes while other people may not be referred to as heroes. The slogan “Watch Out! – Heroism” reflects both the risk and the fragility of the qualities attributed to heroes, to real brave men and courageous women.

The rights to personal characteristics and development, freedom of speech, assembly and human dignity often requires individual courage, these rights are integral for humans. We want to draw attention to the fact that heroes are different from one and another. The existence of respect for every human life increases the possibilities of people making independent decisions and realizing themselves.  The recognition of differences is not an end in itself. The goal is to reflect and discuss why some heroes overrule others, how dangerous it is to be a hero at the expense of others and the importance of civil rights and civic engagement in society.

The festival presents the testimony of several artists and their take on heroism and bravery. The creativity and joint efforts by volunteers, artists and social scientists result in the presentation of a series of exhibitions, performances and artistic activities. A serious of roundtables, public lectures and master classes are arranged with specialist from different disciples.

The festival takes place at various venues around the Muzhestvo Platz / the Place of Heroism: heroes of the past and historical courage are presented at the Museum of Political History on the Bolotnaja Street. The new heroes of our time and creative courage is presented in the studio of  Nepokorennyh / the Studio of the Unbreakable, and the best practices of public and civil courage is presented in the  water tower on the street Karbusheva / the Green Wave.
